These comparisons draw on public product information, not hands-on testing of every tool. Source records identify available references and checks; missing evidence is marked. Buyer fit is an editorial assessment, not a measured performance score. How to use this research.

Static code analysis tools inspect code without running it to find bugs, maintainability problems and security vulnerabilities before software ships. Security-focused tools are also sold as static application security testing (SAST), and buyers search for the category as SAST tools, code scanning tools, source code analysers or code quality platforms.

The eight products compared here fall into three groups. SonarQube and DeepSource combine code quality and security checks on every pull request. Snyk Code, Semgrep and GitHub Code Security with CodeQL are developer-first security scanners with published per-developer or per-committer prices. Checkmarx, Veracode and Coverity are enterprise suites sold by quote; Coverity focuses on C and C++ and on functional safety standards. All pricing notes were checked in October 2026. Entries with dated source checks appear first. That order records research readiness. It is not a measure of product quality or a ranking.

Feature to evaluateOne analysis covers bugs, code smells, test coverage, secrets and taint-tracked vulnerabilities, with pass or fail status posted on pull requests in GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps

SonarQube is SonarSource's code quality and code security product. It is sold as SonarQube Cloud, a hosted service, and SonarQube Server, which buyers run themselves. SonarQube Community Build is a free, open-source edition, and the SonarQube for IDE extension is free.

The analysis engine reports bugs, maintainability issues, test coverage, security hotspots and vulnerabilities. Taint analysis tracks untrusted data across functions and files in Java, C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, PHP, Kotlin, Go and VB.NET, and secrets detection covers more than 400 patterns. Quality gates can fail a CI build in GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Bitbucket Pipelines, Azure Pipelines, Jenkins or Codemagic and post the result to the pull request.

SonarQube Server Developer Edition supports 40 languages and frameworks; Enterprise reaches 48 by adding COBOL, JCL, PL/I, RPG, Apex, VB6, MuleSoft DataWeave and Gosu. Enterprise also adds portfolio reporting and compliance reports for PCI DSS, OWASP Top 10, OWASP ASVS, CWE Top 25, STIG, MISRA and the EU Cyber Resilience Act. Billing counts only private projects and only the largest branch of each, so frequent scans do not raise the bill. Newer add-ons cover AI-assisted remediation and agent workflows.

Potential strengths

  • Published entry price and a free tier for private code up to 50,000 lines
  • Enterprise tiers add COBOL, JCL, PL/I, RPG and Apex analysis

Trade-offs

  • Server edition prices are not published
  • Software composition analysis and advanced SAST require the separate Advanced Security subscription

Snyk Code

mid-marketsnyk.io ↗
Consider forDevelopment teams that want security findings and fix suggestions inside their IDE and pull requests, and that also need open-source, container and infrastructure-as-code scanning from the same vendor
Pricing notesFree costs $0 a month and includes 100 Snyk Code tests a month and 5 projects. Team starts at $25 a month, billed monthly, for teams of up to 10 developers, with 1,000 Snyk Code tests a month, 100 projects, Jira integration and next-business-day support. The Enterprise platform subscription is sold as prepaid credits at $1 per credit; Snyk Code draws 1.0 credit per active contributor per day. Enterprise pricing is set with sales (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateScans source without a build from the IDE, CLI, API or pull request checks, and proposes fixes drawn from a database of more than 35,000 real-world vulnerabilities and fixes

Snyk Code is the static application security testing product in Snyk's platform, which also covers open-source dependencies, containers, infrastructure as code, secrets and API and web testing. The documentation describes it as developer-first SAST that scans code in real time and reports findings in IDEs, repositories and CI/CD pipelines.

Scans run from the Snyk web UI, including pull request checks, from IDE plugins, from the Snyk CLI or through the API. Analysis does not require a build. Findings can be filtered by severity, language and a priority score that combines prevalence, ease of fix and risk factors, and a data flow view traces each issue from source to sink with explanatory content on the vulnerability class.

Snyk Agent Fix generates suggested fixes. Snyk states that its agentic architecture combines frontier AI models with a database of more than 35,000 real-world vulnerabilities and fixes written by its security researchers. The Snyk CLI can also run scans on a local machine or in CI/CD pipelines. Snyk Code Local Engine, a self-contained engine that avoids uploading code, is documented as deprecated and supported only for existing deployments.

Snyk counts contributing developers as people who committed to a monitored private repository in the last 90 days, ignoring public repositories. On the Enterprise subscription, unused capability is flexible: credits apply across any Snyk product, and usage beyond the prepaid pool is invoiced in arrears rather than cut off.

Potential strengths

  • Free and Team plans include SCA, IaC and container scanning as well as SAST
  • Enterprise credits can be moved between Snyk products during the term

Trade-offs

  • Free and Team plans cap the number of Snyk Code tests each month
  • Capabilities such as AI pentesting and coding agent security require the Enterprise platform subscription

Checkmarx

enterprisecheckmarx.com ↗
Consider forSecurity teams in larger organisations that run an application security programme across many repositories and need SAST, SCA, DAST and posture management with SaaS or self-hosted deployment
Pricing notesCheckmarx One is sold in Essentials, Professional and Enterprise packages, or by security area such as Start with SAST and Start with Supply Chain. No list price is published; quotes depend on modules, SaaS or self-hosted deployment and the number of developers in scope. There is no self-serve trial. Fusion, Triage Assist and Remediation Assist use prepaid Checkmarx Credits, and a credit purchase includes a SAST foundation with 10 contributing developer licences (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateFusion SAST combines deterministic analysis with curated frontier-model reasoning through Amazon Bedrock, reconciling both into one deduplicated result set

Checkmarx sells Checkmarx One, an application security platform that covers SAST, software composition analysis, DAST, API security, infrastructure-as-code scanning, secrets detection, container security and application security posture management. Packages are tiered by programme maturity: Essentials covers SAST, SCA, API security and ASPM; Professional adds malicious package protection, repository health, DAST and container security; Enterprise adds IaC security, secrets detection and Codebashing secure-coding training. A SAST-only path is offered for existing on-premises customers.

The SAST product scans source code directly from GitHub, GitLab, Azure and Bitbucket without compilation and offers full scans for depth and incremental scans for pull request speed. Its Fusion feature runs alongside the deterministic engine and uses curated frontier models from Anthropic via Amazon Bedrock to analyse code, including languages and frameworks the rules engine does not cover. Fusion is on by default when Credits are available and can be switched off. Findings Analysis classifies and deduplicates results before they reach developers.

In Checkmarx One, Risk Orchestration adds application, policy and ownership context, Triage Assist weighs reachability and exploitability, and Remediation Assist generates fixes for review. Codebashing is an add-on below the Enterprise package. When a Credit balance reaches zero, Credit-based actions pause rather than incurring automatic overage charges.

Potential strengths

  • SaaS, self-hosted and air-gapped deployment are all offered
  • SAST scans source directly from GitHub, GitLab, Azure and Bitbucket without compilation

Trade-offs

  • No package or seat price is published
  • No self-serve trial; evaluation is by personalised demo

Semgrep

mid-marketsemgrep.dev ↗
Consider forEngineering and security teams that want to write their own rules, run scans in CI and pull requests, and keep code inside their own environment during scans
Pricing notesThe Free Edition costs $0 for up to 10 contributors and 10 private repositories, with Code and Supply Chain included and 60 AI credits. Teams starts at $30 a month per contributor: Code $30, Supply Chain $30 and Secrets $15 per contributor per month, with up to 500 private repositories and 20 AI credits per developer per month. Enterprise is custom-priced with volume pricing, unlimited repositories and contributors, and 50 AI credits per developer per month. Special pricing is offered to early-stage startups (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateRules resemble the code they match, so teams can write custom checks, and the Pro engine adds cross-file and cross-function taint analysis across 35+ languages

Semgrep is an application security platform made up of Semgrep Code for SAST, Semgrep Supply Chain for dependency scanning and malicious package detection, and Semgrep Secrets. The underlying Community Edition engine is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License 2.1, and the commercial Pro engine adds cross-file and cross-function taint analysis with Semgrep's Pro rules across more than 35 languages.

Custom rules are a defining feature. Rules are written to look like the code they match, and teams can publish and share them through the Semgrep Registry and Playground. Scans run from the CLI, in CI through Semgrep's infrastructure on Free and Teams, and as comments on pull and merge requests, with IDE plugins for VS Code and JetBrains.

Semgrep Multimodal combines rule-based detection with AI reasoning. Semgrep states that it finds classes such as insecure direct object references and business logic flaws that rules miss, filters false positives using the context around a finding, writes step-by-step remediation guidance into pull requests and learns from previous triage decisions. AI usage draws on credits included with each plan. A contributor is counted as anyone who committed to a scanned private repository in the past 90 days. Enterprise adds on-premises source code management support, custom CI/CD integration, optional dedicated infrastructure and a dedicated account manager.

Potential strengths

  • Per-product prices are published, so buyers pay only for Code, Supply Chain or Secrets as needed
  • Code scanned locally or in the buyer's CI pipeline is not shared with Semgrep

Trade-offs

  • Free Edition is capped at 10 contributors and 10 private repositories
  • Self-managed source code management and custom CI/CD integrations require Enterprise

Veracode Static Analysis

enterpriseveracode.com ↗
Consider forEnterprises managing security policy across a large application portfolio, including legacy systems and components for which source code is not available
Pricing notesVeracode does not publish pricing. Its pricing address redirects to the platform overview, and buyers request a demo or contact sales for a quote (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateScans raw source without compilation, or compiled binaries when source is unavailable, and its patented Crosscheck path analysis reports every execution path that can reach vulnerable code

Veracode Static Analysis is the SAST component of the Veracode application risk management platform, which also covers software composition analysis, containers, infrastructure as code, secrets, dynamic testing of running web applications and malicious package blocking through Package Firewall. Veracode describes its current product as an adaptable SAST scanning service built on more than 20 years of research.

Three scanning modes are offered. Direct source code scanning analyses raw source without compilation for faster feedback. Source, binary and hybrid scanning allows first-party code to be analysed alongside third-party or proprietary components when their source is not available. Full program analysis handles applications of up to 5 GB of code, which Veracode positions for large legacy codebases and collections of microservices.

The engine models data paths from untrusted input to critical functions and reports findings aligned strictly to the Common Weakness Enumeration. Veracode's patented Crosscheck process (US 9,286,063) is described as identifying every execution path an attacker could use to reach vulnerable code, and Security-Sensitive Context filtering suppresses findings that arise in security-irrelevant contexts. The product models hundreds of frameworks and lists more than 100 languages and frameworks.

Developers receive results in the IDE, through a CLI and in CI/CD pipelines. Security teams get analytics, policy management and portfolio risk reporting. Veracode cites its placement as a Leader in the Forrester Wave for SAST; that is the vendor's own summary of an analyst report.

Potential strengths

  • Binary scanning covers third-party and proprietary components without source access
  • Lists coverage of more than 100 languages and frameworks, including legacy and mobile stacks

Trade-offs

  • No price or plan structure is published
  • No self-serve free tier is offered on the product page

Coverity

specialistblackduck.com ↗
Consider forTeams building embedded, automotive, aerospace, medical or industrial software that must show compliance with MISRA, AUTOSAR, CERT and functional safety standards
Pricing notesBlack Duck does not publish Coverity pricing. Buyers request a quote or a guided evaluation through the Coverity Get pricing page, scoped to codebase, language mix and deployment requirements (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCertified by TÜV SÜD as a support tool under IEC 61508-3, ISO 26262 up to ASIL D and DO-178C up to Level A, backed by a Qualification Kit

Coverity Static Analysis is Black Duck's SAST product for code quality defects and security vulnerabilities. It builds a structural model of each application from its dependencies, compilers and language semantics, then analyses code across files and libraries to find defects that span components. Black Duck lists support for 22 programming languages, more than 250 frameworks and several infrastructure-as-code platforms, and emphasises depth in C and C++, including pointer arithmetic, memory aliasing and thread synchronisation.

Compliance is the main focus. Supported standards include OWASP Top 10 for web and mobile, CWE Top 25, PCI DSS and DISA STIG on the security side, and MISRA C (2004, 2012, 2023, 2025), MISRA C++ (2008, 2023), AUTOSAR C++14, CERT C/C++/Java, ISO 26262, IEC 61508, EN 50128, EN 50657, DO-178C and ISO/IEC TS 17961 for safety and coding. Compliance reports download as PDFs, and trend reports show remediation progress per standard. Administrators can define required checkers centrally so every project runs them.

Developers see results through the Code Sight IDE plug-in, and scans can trigger on commits and pull requests. AI-assisted triage recommends actions and reduces false positives, an MCP server supports remediation of AI-generated code, and buyers can bring their own LLM for data sovereignty. Black Duck Polaris offers the same SAST and SCA engines as SaaS for buyers that do not need on-premises deployment.

Potential strengths

  • Broad standards coverage, including MISRA C 2004 to 2025, MISRA C++, AUTOSAR C++14 and CERT
  • Fully air-gapped on-premises deployment, including on Kubernetes

Trade-offs

  • No published price or free tier
  • Language coverage of 22 languages is narrower than some cloud-first scanners

GitHub Code Security (CodeQL)

mid-marketgithub.com ↗
Consider forEngineering organisations already hosting code on GitHub that want static analysis results as pull request alerts, with security campaigns to reduce existing debt across repositories
Pricing notesGitHub Code Security costs $30 per active committer per month and is an add-on that requires GitHub Team or GitHub Enterprise; GitHub Secret Protection is a separate $19 add-on. An active committer is anyone who pushed a commit to a repository with the feature enabled in the last 90 days. Code scanning is free for public repositories on GitHub.com. AI Scan and agentic autofix consume a separate Code Security AI Credits SKU (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateCodeQL turns a codebase into a queryable database, so security researchers can write one query to find every variant of a vulnerability

GitHub Code Security is the paid GitHub Advanced Security product that bundles code scanning, premium Dependabot features and dependency review. Its static analysis engine is CodeQL, which GitHub describes as a language and toolset that treats code as data: a CodeQL database is generated from the codebase, and queries run against it to find vulnerabilities and errors.

CodeQL supports C and C++, C#, Go, Java and Kotlin, JavaScript and TypeScript, Python, Ruby, Rust, Swift and GitHub Actions workflows. Teams can enable it in three ways: default setup, which chooses languages, query suites and triggers automatically; advanced setup, which adds a customisable workflow file; or the CodeQL CLI run in another CI system with results uploaded to GitHub. Findings appear as code scanning alerts in GitHub, and third-party tools can also feed results in.

Copilot Autofix generates suggested fixes for CodeQL alerts, and GitHub states that it covers 90% of alert types in JavaScript, TypeScript, Java and Python. Security campaigns group related alerts across repositories, assign owners and track progress on existing debt. A free code security risk assessment is available to organisations on GitHub.com.

Licensing is a key constraint. The CodeQL terms allow free use on open-source codebases and for academic research, but automated CI analysis of other code requires a paid licence. The product is also available on GitHub Enterprise Server for self-hosted installations.

Potential strengths

  • Code scanning with CodeQL is free on public repositories
  • Results appear as native GitHub alerts with Copilot Autofix suggestions

Trade-offs

  • Paid only as an add-on to GitHub Team or Enterprise
  • CodeQL licence terms bar automated CI analysis of private code without a paid licence

DeepSource

smbdeepsource.com ↗
Consider forDevelopment teams that want one pull request review covering bugs, security issues, coverage and secrets, with automatic fixes and merge gates
Pricing notesThe Open Source plan is free for public repositories, with 1,000 pull request reviews a month. Team costs $24 per user per month, billed yearly, with unlimited repositories and reviews, a $100 annual AI Review credit per user and AI Review at $8 (Standard) or $15 (Advanced) per 10,000 processed lines of code. Dependency scanning includes 3 targets, then $8 per additional target per month. Enterprise is custom-priced. A 14-day trial includes up to $50 of AI Review credits (checked Oct 2026)
Feature to evaluateEach pull request gets a report card scoring security, reliability, complexity, hygiene and coverage, with gates that block merging below the team's threshold

DeepSource is a code review and static analysis platform covering SAST, software composition analysis, code quality, infrastructure-as-code security and code coverage. Its site states that DeepSource has joined Harness, the software delivery platform; standalone plans remained listed on the pricing page when it was checked.

On each pull request, DeepSource runs more than 5,000 deterministic rules alongside an AI review agent and posts inline comments on bugs, anti-patterns and security vulnerabilities. Autofix supplies pre-generated patches for most issues. A PR report card groups findings into security, reliability, complexity, hygiene and coverage, and pull request gates can stop a merge when quality falls below the configured threshold. Secrets detection, OWASP Top 10 and CWE/SANS Top 25 reports, Slack and Jira integrations, monorepo support, an API and webhooks, and audit logs are included on Team.

Pricing separates seats from AI usage. Each Team user carries a $100 annual AI Review credit, and review above that is billed per 10,000 processed lines of code at Standard or Advanced rates. Enterprise adds an enterprise cloud option, self-hosted and air-gapped deployment, bring-your-own keys for Anthropic Claude, OpenAI or Google Gemini so inference runs on the buyer's infrastructure, SSO, IP restrictions, an uptime SLA and payment through Google Cloud Marketplace. DeepSource also offers a CLI for use with AI coding agents.

Potential strengths

  • Published per-user price with unlimited repositories on Team
  • Enterprise supports self-hosted and air-gapped deployment with bring-your-own AI keys

Trade-offs

  • AI Review beyond the included credit is billed by processed lines of code
  • DeepSource has joined Harness, so buyers should confirm the product roadmap and contract entity

How to choose a vendor

Decide between code quality and security scanning

SonarQube and DeepSource report bugs, maintainability issues and test coverage alongside security findings. Snyk Code, Semgrep, CodeQL, Checkmarx and Veracode concentrate on security vulnerabilities. Coverity covers both, with an emphasis on defects in large C and C++ codebases. Buyers wanting a single quality gate on every pull request and buyers running an application security programme are often comparing different products.

Model the bill on the vendor's counting unit

Units differ. SonarQube Cloud bills by lines of code in private projects, Semgrep and GitHub by contributors or active committers in the last 90 days, DeepSource by user, and Snyk's enterprise plan by credits drawn per active contributor per day. Count recent committers and private lines of code before comparing list prices.

Check language and standards coverage early

Coverage varies by product and plan. SonarQube Enterprise adds COBOL, JCL, PL/I and RPG; Coverity lists MISRA, AUTOSAR, ISO 26262 and DO-178C support; CodeQL lists nine language groups plus GitHub Actions workflows. Run each shortlisted tool against a representative repository and compare the findings it reports in the languages that matter.

Confirm where code is analysed

Regulated teams may need self-hosted or air-gapped deployment. SonarQube Server, Coverity, Checkmarx, DeepSource Enterprise and GitHub Enterprise Server run on the buyer's infrastructure, and Semgrep states that code scanned locally or in the buyer's CI does not leave that environment. Ask vendors which AI features send code to external models.

Frequently asked questions

What are static code analysis tools?

Static code analysis tools examine source code, and in some cases compiled binaries, without running it. They flag bugs, maintainability problems, insecure coding patterns and policy violations, usually in the IDE, on pull requests or as a gate in CI. Security-focused static analysis is also called static application security testing, or SAST.

How much do static code analysis tools cost?

Published prices checked in October 2026 differ by billing unit. SonarQube Cloud Team starts at $34 a month for up to 100,000 lines of code. Snyk Team starts at $25 a month for up to 10 developers. Semgrep Code costs $30 per contributor per month, GitHub Code Security $30 per active committer per month and DeepSource Team $24 per user per month billed yearly. Checkmarx, Veracode and Coverity are sold by quote.

Are there free static code analysis tools?

Several products here have free options. SonarQube offers an open-source Community Build and a cloud free tier up to 50,000 private lines of code. The Semgrep Community Edition engine is licensed under LGPL 2.1, and the Semgrep Free Edition covers up to 10 contributors. Snyk Free includes 100 Code tests a month. CodeQL code scanning is free on public GitHub repositories, and DeepSource's Open Source plan covers public repositories.

What is the difference between SAST and static code analysis?

Static code analysis is the broad practice of inspecting code without executing it, including style, complexity and reliability checks. SAST is the security subset that looks for vulnerabilities such as injection flaws. SonarQube, DeepSource and Coverity report both quality and security issues, while Snyk Code, Semgrep, CodeQL, Checkmarx and Veracode centre on security.

How does static analysis differ from DAST?

Static analysis reads code before it runs and points to the line that causes a problem. Dynamic application security testing probes a running application from outside and finds issues that only appear at runtime, such as server misconfiguration. The two are complementary; Checkmarx and Veracode sell both. See the dast-tools comparison for dynamic scanners.

Which tools can run fully on premises?

SonarQube Server, Coverity and DeepSource Enterprise support self-hosted deployment, and Coverity and DeepSource list air-gapped options. Checkmarx supports self-hosted and on-premises deployment. GitHub Code Security runs on GitHub Enterprise Server, and Semgrep states that code scanned locally or in the buyer's CI is not shared with it. Snyk documents its Snyk Code Local Engine as deprecated.

Which tools support MISRA and functional safety standards?

Coverity lists MISRA C, MISRA C++, AUTOSAR C++14, CERT, ISO 26262, IEC 61508 and DO-178C and holds TÜV SÜD tool certification. SonarQube Server Enterprise lists MISRA C++:2023 compliance and MISRA reporting. Buyers in regulated industries should ask for the qualification evidence their certification body requires.

How was this list compiled?

Candidates came from buyer questions about static code analysis tools and from vendor websites. Each product, pricing and documentation page cited here was fetched on 23 October 2026. Veracode, Coverity and Checkmarx publish no prices, so none is quoted. No product was tested hands-on, and no entry is vendor-confirmed. The order of entries follows source readiness and content sequence and is not a ranking.
