Best MTD Compatible Software (2026): Top 10 Compared
MTD compatible software keeps digital records and sends VAT returns or Income Tax quarterly updates to HMRC through its Making Tax Digital interface. The ten products below fall into three groups. Full accounting packages (Xero, Sage Accounting, FreeAgent, Zoho Books, IRIS KashFlow and Clear Books) handle invoicing, bank feeds and reporting as well as filing. Low-cost and free bookkeeping tools (Pandle and QuickFile) cover sole traders, landlords and micro businesses. Bridging tools (TaxCalc MTD Quarterly Filer and VT Software) submit from spreadsheets or desktop cash books for users who want to keep their existing records.

MTD compatible software is the software HMRC requires for Making Tax Digital. Every VAT-registered business must keep digital VAT records and file returns through it, and from 6 April 2026 sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 must also use it for Income Tax quarterly updates and the annual return. Buyers also search for the category as MTD software, HMRC-recognised software or Making Tax Digital software.
The ten products compared here all appear on HMRC’s MTD for VAT software finder. They range from full accounting packages to free bookkeeping plans and spreadsheet bridging tools. Pricing notes were checked in October 2026, and every entry has a dated source check, so the order follows content sequence and is not a ranking.

Pricing follows the legal form of the business rather than feature tiers. A Tax Timeline shows upcoming tax liabilities and deadlines in real time, and the product generates MTD-compatible VAT returns and Self Assessment returns. Limited companies also get Final Accounts and Corporation Tax filing.

Every account size includes invoicing, a branded client area, purchase and receipt management, banking automation, MTD-compatible VAT returns, estimates, multi-currency and reporting, with free unlimited users, two-factor authentication, 1 GB of storage, automated backups and API access. QuickFile states more than 400 integrations.

VT Software is a UK developer of downloadable bookkeeping and accounts production software, listed by HMRC as VT Software Limited among recognised MTD for VAT products. Its MTD page states that VAT returns can be submitted from VT Transaction+ or VT Cashbook, or from a spreadsheet using the VT Report bridging tool, for any number of businesses with no limit on submissions.
The pricing page extends that to Income Tax: VT Transaction+ and VT Report submit both VAT returns and Income Tax quarterly updates, and VT Accounts Suite adds submission through an agent services account. Transaction+ also covers customer and supplier ledgers, foreign currency bank accounts, bank statement imports, reconciliation, departmental analysis and standard, cash accounting and reverse charge VAT.
The model suits practices and bookkeepers who prefer software installed on their own machines. Each licence is for one named person, so firms with several staff pay per user.

- Bridging from Excel included in the Transaction+ package
Trade-offs
- Free VT Cash Book has no MTD features
- Downloadable software rather than a cloud product with bank feeds

TaxCalc, developed by Acorah Software Products, is best known for tax return and accounts production software used by UK accountancy practices. HMRC lists Acorah Software Products Ltd (TaxCalc) among recognised MTD for VAT products, and TaxCalc describes MTD Quarterly Filer as an HMRC-recognised spreadsheet bridging solution for MTD for Income Tax.
The business edition lets sole traders and landlords keep their spreadsheets. An on-screen cell selector imports figures into each quarterly update. The software retrieves MTD obligations from HMRC to create the standard quarterly periods, accepts add-backs, disallowables and private-use adjustments, and fetches an HMRC tax estimate after each submission. Several sole trade and property businesses can be managed together.
Users who also need the annual return can add TaxCalc for Individuals, and VAT-registered users can add VAT Filer for Business. Accountancy practices use the separate MTD Quarterly Filer practice edition to file for clients.
Potential strengths
- Lowest published annual price for MTD Income Tax on this page
- Keeps existing spreadsheet records in use
Trade-offs
- Bridging only: no invoicing, bank feeds or ledger
- Self Assessment and VAT filing are separate add-ons
- Product reference
- Product documentation
- Pricing source
- Billing terms: Per year
- Source review: checked Oct 25, 2026

Frequently asked questions
What is MTD compatible software?
MTD compatible software is software that HMRC has recognised for Making Tax Digital. It keeps digital records and sends VAT returns, or Income Tax quarterly updates and the final return, to HMRC through HMRC's interface. It can be full record-keeping software, such as Xero or FreeAgent, or bridging software that submits figures from spreadsheets, such as TaxCalc MTD Quarterly Filer or VT Report.
Who has to use MTD compatible software?
Every VAT-registered business must use it for VAT returns, regardless of turnover, and the old VAT online account stopped accepting returns from 1 November 2022. For Income Tax, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 must use it from 6 April 2026. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.
How can a business check that software is HMRC recognised?
HMRC publishes two finders: one for MTD for VAT and one for MTD for Income Tax. The VAT finder listed 469 products when checked on 25 October 2026 and includes every vendor on this page. HMRC states that it cannot recommend one product over another. Recognition is by named product, so check the specific edition, such as Sage Business Cloud Accounting rather than Sage 50.
Is there free MTD compatible software?
Yes. Zoho Books, Pandle, Clear Books and Sage Sole Trader offer free plans that their vendors say cover MTD for Income Tax, and Zoho Books and Pandle include MTD VAT filing on their free plans. QuickFile is free up to 1,000 ledger entries. FreeAgent is free for eligible NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank and Mettle customers.
What is bridging software?
Bridging software connects records kept elsewhere, usually spreadsheets, to HMRC. It reads the figures and submits them, so the business does not need to move its bookkeeping into a new system. On this page, TaxCalc MTD Quarterly Filer bridges for Income Tax from £24 a year, VT Report bridges for VAT and Income Tax, and QuickFile sells MTD VAT bridging.
What does MTD for Income Tax require each year?
HMRC requires digital records of self-employment and property income and expenses, a quarterly update to HMRC for each income source, and a tax return by 31 January after the tax year that includes any other income such as pensions, savings, dividends or a partnership share. Quarterly updates are summaries, not tax returns. Only one product can be used for each separate submission.
Can one product handle both MTD for VAT and MTD for Income Tax?
Several can. Xero lists VAT submission and MTD for Income Tax on every plan. FreeAgent, Zoho Books, Pandle and VT Software also state both. Clear Books covers Income Tax on its sole trader plans and adds MTD VAT on Sole Trader Plus. The IRIS KashFlow pages reviewed described VAT only, and TaxCalc sells VAT filing as a separate add-on.
How were these MTD compatible software products selected and checked?
Each product appears on HMRC's MTD for VAT software finder, checked on 25 October 2026. Each vendor's pricing page was fetched on the same date, and prices are quoted only where the vendor publishes them. QuickBooks was considered but left out because its UK prices load at runtime and could not be captured. No product was tested hands-on, no entry is vendor-confirmed, and the order is content sequence, not a ranking.
